Christian Wedding

Christians see marriage as vows taken before God. There are many Christian customs across the country. Each Christian wedding tends to be unique.  The important marriage rites followed by Christians include blessing of the rings, the crowning, tying the ‘Minnu’ (blessed pendant) and covering the bride with Manthrakodi (wedding saree).

The Unique Christian Wedding

A ring is a fitting symbol for a Christian wedding promise. This is an opportunity to mention the vows that one takes on the wedding day. It is a circle with no beginning and no end. Hence, it symbolizes eternity in their marriage vows.

In Christian wedding tradition, the crowning ceremony represents the crown of martyrdom since true marriage involves immeasurable self-sacrifice. Crowning is one of the most important parts of Christian weddings.

The tying of the Minnu declares that the couple is tied together for life. This is a typical Indian tradition which is followed throughout the country. The Manthrakodi or the wedding saree is a gift to the bride from the groom. This tradition also represents the external evidence of the promise that the groom makes in the presence of the community of being a protector, provider and redeemer of his bride in all her life. Placing the Manthrakodi upon the bride’s head is an act of humility, chastity and devotion to her lifelong partner united in marriage by God.
