An Attire, so special…!

An Attire, so special…!

Weddings can be called a social necessity, because it is through the wedding that families are formed. It is through weddings that a society becomes bigger. This social necessity is being fulfilled as a religious duty.  The union of two person – two families, may it be in any culture or in any religion, is considered heavenly.

Wedding day is supposed to be ‘the Big Day’ for the bride and the groom, especially, for the bride. She wants to look her best on that day. On the wedding day, the bride decks herself up in the best of traditional attires. She takes exclusive care while choosing her bridal trousseaus, making sure that she has a wide range of unique designs and patterns to choose from.

weddingThe styles and dresses of the wedding are dependent on the respective culture and of course, the religion of the bride. In Kerala, be it a Christian wedding, a Hindu wedding or a Muslim wedding ceremony, the bride is treated as a centre of attraction and her family makes every effort to make her the prettiest lady of the day.

The Christian Bride

The dress worn by the bride of a Christian wedding is slightly different from the colour and pattern of the bridal dress worn by girls in Hindu and Muslim weddings. Compared to the bright coloured sari that is traditionally worn in marriages of other religious communities in Kerala, the Christian bride wears a white colour sari. Her bridal dress also includes an elegant white veil. Since the colour ‘white’ symbolizes purity of the Christian bride, they choose to wear this colour on their auspicious wedding day. Bridal gowns are also starting to make their show at Kerala weddings. Many Christian brides choose beautiful flowing wedding gowns over the traditional sari. These wedding gowns are generally of a single colour, usually a white or ivory, with plenty of rich embellishments consisting of sequins, lace work and beads.

Muslim Brides

There is no specific wedding dress for the Muslim bride. Most of the modern Muslim brides choose the Lehenga Choli for their wedding day. Different kinds of Lehenga Choli are now available in the market. The traditional-minded Muslim brides wear traditional Lehenga Cholis. The Cholis with stone embroideries are also extremely beautiful. A Muslim bride can also wear sari on the day of her wedding. There are different types of bridal sarees that a Muslim bride can chose for herself. Indian Muslim brides also wear burkahs. Many of the traditional Indian brides wear kurta on the day of marriage.

Hindu Brides

In a Hindu marriage in Kerala, the bride is made to wear a bright colored sari. Most of the brides in Keralite homes prefer wearing Kancheepurum sari on their wedding day as this sari is considered to be the finest and most auspicious material available in this state. Besides Kancheepurum sarees, Keralite girls also wear silk, crepe and georgette saris on their wedding ceremony. Bridal dress of a Hindu girl is heavily decorated generally with beautiful and finest handiworks of zari, zardosi, embroidery, mirror work, cut work, sequence, pearl work, kasab, patchwork and sometimes kundan. These fine decorations add special effects to the bridal dress and makes the wearer look elegant and classy.
