There are basically four main customs in a Knanaya wedding ceremony &#8211; the Othukalyanam, Mylanchi Ideel, Chantham Chaarthu, and then, finally the wedding ceremony. Anju and Stephen\u2019s wedding ceremony was the perfect example of a complete Knanaya wedding.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Othukalyanam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Othukalyanam is the engagement ceremony in Knanaya custom. Anju and Stephen\u2019s Othukalyanam took place at the Sacred Heart Church, followed by the reception at Chaithanya Auditorium, Kottayam on August 5<sup>th<\/sup>, 2014. The main ceremony was in the church, presided over by the priest and it involved clapping of hands by the parental uncles of both Stephen and Anju, showing the agreement for marriage.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of this Knanaya wedding ceremony was golden yellow. Anju and Stephen began the function by lighting the candles on stage. As a symbol of unity, the bride and groom\u2019s parental uncles shared among themselves, a fried full chicken. Then this lovely<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamarindweddings.com\/stephen-anju-knanaya-wedding.php\">\u00a0Knanaya wedding ceremony<\/a> ended with lunch service.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1472\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1472\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A2548.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1472 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A2548-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Knanaya Wedding Ceremony\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knanaya Wedding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A2838.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1474 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A2838-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Knanaya Wedding Ceremony\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mylanchi Ideel\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Stephen and Anju\u2019s Mylanchi Ideel and Chantham Chaarthu ceremony was held at Maadapparambil Resort on 7<sup>th<\/sup> August 2014. Usually, Mylanchi Ideel takes place at the bride\u2019s house and Chantham Chaarthu, at the groom\u2019s house. As Stephen and Anju had a number of mutual friends, they decided to conduct both the ceremonies in the same venue.<\/p>\n<p>Mylanchi Ideel is the beautification of the bride, a ceremony which takes by smearing of henna on the bride\u2019s palms and feet. In this Knanaya wedding ceremony, first a \u2018pulpaya\u2019 (mat) was placed on the stage to symbolize the creation of the stage and in turn, the relationship. Next, three wooden stools were placed on the \u2018pulpaya\u2019, one of which was used to place the mylanchi, the next one for the bride, Anju, and the third one for Anju\u2019s \u2018avakashi\u2019 or parental relative who helps with the application of henna.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1482\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1482\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_9993.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1482 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_9993-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Knanaya Wedding Ceremony\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knanaya Wedding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A \u2018Kuthuvilakku\u2019 was placed near the bride\u2019s stool. Tweleve girls with the &#8220;Thaalam&#8221; escorted Anju on to the stage. After the guests give their permission, the bride&#8217;s parental relatives give her \u2018paachoru\u2019 as well as gold ornaments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1486\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1486\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_0369.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1486 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/IMG_0369-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Knanaya Wedding Ceremony\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knanaya Wedding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Chantham Chaarthu<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Chanthan Chaarthu ceremony which means the beautification of the groom, is where the groom is given a ceremonial shave by the barber. First, Stephen\u2019s parents and brother sits on the stage and his sisters place a bedsheet and \u2018pulpaya\u2019 on the stage. They then place three stools on the stage; one for the groom, one for the barber and one to place all the items needed for the beatification purpose.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1478\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A3917.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1478 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A3917-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Knanaya Wedding Ceremony\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knanaya Wedding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before shaving, the barber asks for permission from the guests three times, and then begins giving the shave and haircut.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1487\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A39831.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1487 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/K0A39831-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Knanaya Wedding Ceremony\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knanaya Wedding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After this, Stephen went for a dress change and was later accompanied to the stage by in-laws. And the reception was at Maadapparambil Resort, Thodupuzha. The couple wanted a mix of western and traditional Kanaya customs, and on 8<sup>th<\/sup> August, attended a rehearsal at the church and the reception hall. The church was 120 years old and had an ancestral feel about it. She then makes the sign of the cross on their foreheads with a piece of the blessed Palm Sunday leaf, dipped in a bowl with grains of paddy and water. Later, the couple drink milk and eat fruit from the same cup as a symbol of unity. The fun element of a wedding is when everyone feels free to enjoy themselves with the props at the photobooth. The DJ party went well into the night.
