The henna plant is associated with positive vibes and provides the link to an ancient age, full of good and bad spirits. Generations of women have used a paste made primarily of dried ground henna leaves for their designs. Some of these designs range from simple blobs to intricate geometric patterns designed to ward off evil, promote fertility and attract good energy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1268\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1268\" src=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2.jpg\" alt=\"henna\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The practise of decorating the skin is popular mainly in\u00a0India\u00a0and the\u00a0Arab world. However, due to its rising popularity in the West, Indian cinema and entertainment industry, the people in\u00a0Nepal,\u00a0Pakistan,\u00a0Bangladesh\u00a0and the\u00a0Maldives\u00a0also use them. Mehendi decorations became fashionable in the West in the late 1990s, where westerners call them &#8220;henna tattoos&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Women traditionally apply henna\u00a0during special\u00a0Hindu <a href=\"http:\/\/tamarindweddings.com\/\">weddings<\/a>\u00a0and festivals like\u00a0Karva Chauth,\u00a0Vat Purnima,\u00a0Diwali,\u00a0Bhai Dooj and\u00a0Teej. Many women draw designs on their hands and feet and sometimes, on the back of their shoulders too. Men also apply it similarly on their arms, legs, back, and chest. Due to a\u00a0limited supply of traditional henna artists, usually people buy ready-made cones, which are ready-to-use and easy. However, in rural India, women grind fresh henna leaves on stones with added oil, which though not as refined as professionally prepared cones, achieve much darker colours.<\/p>\n<p>Many people add synthetic\u00a0dye to the mix to give it a black color. This is most likely due to the desire for a &#8220;tattoo-black&#8221; appearance. Alata is a similar flower-based dye used paint the feet of the brides in some regions of India.
