Wedding Sweets – Forever So Sweet!

At the heart of every Indian is the undying love for sweets! As passed on by our ancestors, we strongly believe in the tradition of having something sweet before beginning a new venture: Shub Aarambh, as we call it! So it only comes naturally that the great Indian wedding is going to be a celebration of sweets!

Children running around with hands full of ladoo, elders gifting boxes of exquisite delicacies, the bride and groom digging into pieces of heavenly chocolate are all regular sights at the Indian wedding!

Types of wedding sweets in India :

The common Indian wedding sweets are the ghee-based maladu, Mysore pauk, jelebi and ravaladu, milk-based kesar peda, burfi, rasamalai and coconut khiva and the flour-based delicacies such as cupcakes, truffle cakes and brownies. The Bengali sweets are the most famous of Indian wedding sweets! Known for their rich taste, Bengali sweets are always in great demand during weddings and festivities! Champakai, rasagulla, and rasapoori are some of the Bengali delights served at weddings. Punjabi kheer is often served opulently at Indian weddings. Gajrela and khoya pinnian are also sure items on the wedding dessert menu.

The burfi is one of the most in-demand of wedding sweets! The milk sweet comes in a variety of flavours, ranging from pure milk to pista to almond to chocolate to rose… Burfis are avidly gifted among parties during the wedding.

Halwas are wedding favorates! Originally from Arabia, we have adopted the Halwa as our own and from then on, incorporated them into almost every wedding. Halwas can be of badam, wheat or even fruit! The tastiest of all the flavours is the gajar halwa.

The gajar halwa is a tantalizing dish of milk and fresh carrot! At some wedding parties, they are served as a thick pudding while at others, they are loosely served with plenty of toned milk to drink at the bottom of the bowl.

The Urundai is also a wedding delight. Two famous urundai types are the yellu urundai and groundnut urundai.

South Indian weddings have a specialty sweet which is served at almost every wedding! – The Payasam! A warm mixture of milk and ingredients such as dhal, rice, semia, aval or wheat completes the wedding buffet. Payasams when served with sadhyas gives the ultimate effect! – Heavy and nutritious, with just the right amount of sweetness to make your day!

English sweets are usually mixtures of flour, milk and nuts. Baked varieties such as cupcakes, brownies and truffle cakes are served at almost every wedding. The brownie with ice cream is a hit among children and adults equally! Ice cream in different flavours such as butterscotch, blueberry, pista and mango quells the heat of the summer days and warm custard pudding which melts in your mouth the minute you slip it in are winter wedding delights. Donuts with sprinkles, chocolate donuts with sprinkles, fountains all make great wedding desserts!

For a healthier option, you can have fruit salad which is a sure refreshment at any wedding party. Don’t forget that some of your guests may be diabetic! For them, create a customized menu comprising of sugar-free desserts. Egg-less cakes are also a good option for the health-conscious wedding party guest.

Remember that wedding sweets are not just for the wedding day. Send a few neatly packed khaju bufis and chocolate balls with your wedding invitation. Give away gift-wrapped boxes of balusahi and jelebi as wedding favours! – And delight your wedding guest!

Wedding sweets can be adorned with traces of edible decor. This makes them a sight for the eyes and also a treat for the stomach! Tiny silk flags and edible arrows can decorate the sweets and make them look adorable.

Altogether, wedding sweets make sinful delicious additions to the wedding feast menu. The great Indian wedding comes alive only with the serving of ample slices of fudge pastry, gajrela and milk peda. So make sure that you have plenty of these sweets to sweeten up your wedding day!
