The Art of Mehendi and Mehendi Designs

Mehendi is a song on a bride’s hand, singing a floral and rich tribute to her entry into marriage. The ancient artwork of mehendi adorn the hands of brides across time frames and state boundaries. The fair hands of Mumtaz Mahal and others have been an easel to this beautiful artwork!

Mehandi artwork is a symbol of adoration. The Indian bride decorates herself with these intricate mehendi designs as beautifully as possible to celebrate her partner’s coming into her life.

Types of Mehendi Designs …

Henna, the English name for Mehandi, is prominently of two types – Indian mehendi and Arabian mehendi. The mehendi designs depicted with these two mixes are also entirely different. While Indian mehendi designs are often small and intricate, with the designs being more of musical and peacock elements, Arabian mehendi designs are more spaced and prominent. The rich red-colour mehendi is a favourite for brides, especially Hindu brides while dark and black mehendi is preferred for Muslim brides.

A skilled mehendi artist can speak volumes about design, art and texture of bridal mehendi. Talking to Nasrin, a prominent and tasteful mehendi artist in Kochi: “Every mehendi design is customized as per the bride’s idea of the art. Mehendi designs for brides start from just above the elbow to the fingertips on both hands. The feet are also designed aesthetically.”

She adds with a tinge of laughter, “An old Indian tradition says that the alphabets of the bridegroom’s name are scattered across the mehendi design. It is the duty of the bridegroom to find out all the letters spread in the mehendi design. The sisters of the bride take it up as a challenge and will demand money from the groom if he cannot find the alphabets in the mehendi designs.”
